Tribute to Rt. Ex. Sir Garfield Sobers from The Bishop and Diocese of Barbados 

It is with profound sorrow and deep thanksgiving that the Anglican Church in Barbados, joins with the people of Barbados, the wider Caribbean, and the international cricketing fraternity in mourning the passing of our beloved National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, who departed this life last Friday morning, July 17, 2026, at the age of 89.

We give Almighty God heartfelt thanks for Sir Garfield’s remarkable life, his extraordinary gifts, and his unwavering service to our nation and region. Blessed with exceptional talent, discipline, and determination, Sir Garfield redefined excellence in the game of cricket. Widely acclaimed as the greatest all‑round cricketer the world has ever known, his achievements transcended records and statistics. He became a symbol of Caribbean pride, resilience, and possibility, inspiring generations to believe that greatness can emerge from humble beginnings.

Yet, beyond the applause and accolades, Sir Garfield was admired for his humility, gracious spirit, generosity, and gratitude. He encouraged and supported aspiring cricketers, freely sharing his wisdom and experience, while remaining a proud son of Barbados whose life reflected dignity, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. His knighthood and recognition as a National Hero stand as enduring testimonies to how his homeland honoured him in life, even as we now celebrate his legacy in death.

His influence extended far beyond the cricket field. He united people across cultures and nations, reminding us that true greatness is measured not only by accomplishment but also by character, service, and the positive influence we leave on others. His was indeed a life well lived and an innings well-played.

We extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to his family, loved ones, friends, former teammates, and the entire cricketing fraternity. May they find strength and comfort in God’s abiding presence, giving thanks for a life that enriched countless others.
